Rex Tarkleton and I were comparing stories about the reasons we've been thrown in the clink. I didn't have much to say, having never been incarcerated, so I sat back and listened to what sounded like a grocery list: Drunk and disorderly, lewd conduct, indecency, grand theft auto, public brawling, disturbing the peace, etc. But what really made me pay attention was an incident involving a knife fight with a one-legged nun in El Paso, Texas. Not only was he arrested and convicted, but excommunicated as well!

Fakes And Forgeries Class: Guernica

I received a gift this Christmas which was enrollment in the Fakes and Forgeries class held at the Newport Art Museum. I chose Picasso's Gurnica and originally wanted to put the GOP candidates in there, but I might do a straight up copy. If I have time, I might do a second with political overtones. I'm working on a 16"x40" canvas and finished maybe 1/3 of the under drawing. Hopefully it will be included in a show at Spring Bull Gallery. More to come.

Well, if you've been following my blog or Twitter and Facebook feeds, you know a couple of weeks ago I participated in Comics Should Be Good's The Line It Is Drawn feature located at Comic Book Resources. Three of the ongoing artists who contribute pieces weekly moved on to other things which prompted a call to artists for their replacement. About 140 people submitted pieces on a chosen theme for two weeks, yours truly included. I received news last week that I am now one of the ongoing weekly artists. A many thanks goes out to all those who voted for me and all your kind words.

This week's theme was:

Happy Holidays! Simply name a comic book character and our artists will come up with a Holiday-themed drawing featuring said character. if you want to suggest a Holiday theme along with the character, go right ahead, but it is not necessary.

Someone suggested "Green Hulk in a red Santa suit and Red Hulk in a green Santa suit" via twitter, defining the theme, and that's what I chose to depict. Another suggestion involved the Watcher, which one of the artists suggested we should all include in our pieces; Uatu should be hanging out somewhere overlooking the holiday happenings. So, enjoy the first of many pieces I will submit as a weekly contributor to The Line It Is Drawn!

Bill Mantlo Repaneled

I've done a few pieces for Anthony Vukojevich's excellent blog Repaneled, where Anthony invites people to submit pieces inspired by published comic panels. I peruse the blog pretty often and came across David H.'s Rom piece and was touched by his homage to writer Bill Mantlo. Growing up, I read a lot of Bill's Incredible Hulk run and was enamored by his and Mike Magnola's Rocket Racoon limited series. He is responsible for developing the licensed properties Micronauts and Rom Spacenight into successful comics series that are still near-and-dear to comic fans' hearts and creating the street fighting duo Cloak and Dagger in his Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man run.

Bill was struck down by a hit-and-run driver nearly 20 years ago while rollerblading. The accident has left him severely impaired and dependent on a full-time care facility, and well, in a pretty horrible state. Mantlo's family has had to sell off most of his assets and possessions to pay for his ongoing care when his insurance provider denied him the claim for the long-term assistance he needs. While unable to donate money to the cause, I hope to send Bill the piece above this holiday season and thank him for all the joy his work provided me as a kid and continues to do to this day. Thanks, David, for pointing me to this link.

This piece is a repaneled homage, inspired by a panel from The Incredible Hulk #290 (Dec. 1983), written by Bill Mantlo, penciled by Sal Buscema, and inked by Carlos Garzon. And, yes, of course, I chose a panel with MODOK in it.

Rex Tarkleton, American war hero and angry hobo, is toeing the line and producing some of the best, err... not best, but... kind of okay work of his lifetime lately and in a consistent fashion. I mentioned this was highly unlike him given his past working schedule here on the blog, often leaving me to scramble to fill his absent post with my own artwork. He kindly assured me that what I do wouldn't be considered artwork by even a blind man's standards while patting my head condescendingly. It bummed me out a little until he told me I was pretty, though, right before he vomited in my kitchen sink.

Palette-Swap: Dynamite Duke

This month's theme over at the Palette-Swap blog is Sega games. Personally, I spent my youth with my eyes glued to an NES, tapping away at A and B buttons in a frenzy, so I didn't really know much about the Sega Master System aside from remembering all the game boxes had a grid background on them, which I wanted to capture in my piece. I chose Dynamite Duke after an internet search because the franchise looked like fun and had a cool logo (not so much on the Master System version). It was a third-person shooter adapted from an arcade game for Sega's home system in the late '80s. Enjoy.

Here's the piece for week two at the try-out for The Line It Is Drawn at CBR's Comics Should Be Good blog. The theme was team-up two comic book characters that have never teamed-up before and one tweeted suggestion on that theme was Plastic Man and Mr. Fantastic. I'm glad someone suggested it, because I already had it in mind, so how's that for kismet?

This is last piece to be submitted for consideration as one of the two new ongoing artists, and a third as a back-up alternate for the weekly The Line It Is Drawn. My first piece got a lot of good feedback from a lot of people I don't know and I hope I'm chosen to continue on in the voting process, as of now I'm not quite sure how that will work, but stay tuned. I heard last week that three of the artists who participate in Comic Book Resources' "The Line It Is Drawn" are leaving, opening up some spots for new blood to participate. The Line is a weekly happenstance on the Comics Should Be Good blog wherein Brian Cronin puts forth a thematic idea. Followers suggest specific pieces they want to see within the theme via Twitter, forming a list that the participating artists can pick and choose from to illustrate. Last week, Brian asked: Superify it! Pick a person, real or fictional, and our artists will draw them as a superhero. I went with Theodore Roosevelt, one suggestion out of over 250, and submitted it. If it fairs well, I may get chosen to do a piece every week. Wish me luck.

Uncle B: "Hey, Oliver. What should I draw?"

Oliver: "I don't want to hang out with you."

Uncle B: "You don't want to hang out with me? Okay. Anyway, what should I draw?"

Oliver: "A shark looking at some people and he's eating people."

Uncle B: "A shark... eating people? That's a little... dark."

Oliver: "Yeah. The shark just has to get out of there and he has to eat through people."

Uncle B: "Okay. A shark eating people."

Oliver: "Yeah. A shark eating people."

Oliver leaves the room to watch Open Season 3. A half hour or so passes, Uncle Q and Sam The Girl arrive. Oliver comes back for dinner and spies the crayon drawing.

Oliver: "Hey! That's not what I asked you to draw!"

Uncle B: "Yeah, it is. What did you ask me to draw?"

Oliver: "A shark eating people!"

Uncle B: "That's what I drew. Ask Uncle Q."

Oliver brings drawing to Uncle Q.

Uncle Q: "Hey, it's a shark eating people! Hahaha!"

Even though my little art director wasn't that enthused by the completion of our collaboration, I hope O-man gives me another chance and works with me again.

The Legion Of Monsters: The Man-Thing

Dr. Ted Sallis was a bio-chemist working on a super soldier serum as part of a scientific team in the Everglades. When agents of AIM attacked his laboratory, Sallis fled with the only vial of serum he had been working on, injecting it into himself. He soon crashes his car in the swamp where chemical and mystical forces transform his body into a living swamp-creature: the hulking Man-Thing. With hazy, fading memories and a dimmed intellect, Man-Thing roams and has the ability to now burn anyone who knows fear with but a touch.

Man-Thing first appeared in the magazine Savage Tales #1, May 1971 and first joined the Legion of Monsters in Marvel Premiere #28, Feb. 1976. Also, if you do a search for "Man-Thing" on this blog, you'll see I dig him and draw him a lot.

Marvel Universe Too: What If...? Featuring Giant-Size Man-Thing

Two months ago, I was part of a blog project called DC Fifty-Too where I, along with many other talented comics peoples, created covers for properties we would like to see in response to DC Comics' event, commonly referred to as DC Fifty-Two, wherein the company released 52 new #1 issues. Well, apparently everyone liked doing it so much that there was a clamor for a Marvel version.

I went with Man-Thing and did a riff on his 70's Giant-Size title as a risque, but obvious, double entendre cover.

Cursed with a lust for blood, Morbius stalks the night and currently leads the Legion of Monsters. Morbius was first introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #101, Oct. 1971 and joined the Legion of Monsters in Marvel Premiere #28, Feb. 1976.

The Legion Of Monsters: Ghost Rider

Johnny Blaze was a motorcycle stuntman in a circus act with father-figure Crash Simpson. When Crash was diagnosed with a terminal cancer, Johnny turned to the occult, making a deal with Satan by offering his soul in exchange for curing Crash's cancer. Like most deals with the devil, Blaze was duped as Crash shortly died after a failed motorcycle stunt. After being unable to claim Blaze's soul due to a woman's pure love for him, Satan bonded Johnny Blaze with the spirit of vengeance, a demon named Zarathos, who would take control of Blaze's body, granting him hell-spawned powers and the visage of a leather-cladded, flaming-skulled monster known as Ghost Rider. Equipped with a mystical bike, Ghost Rider was summoned when evil reared its head, exacting the will of Satan by returning the wicked to a punishment in Hell.

Ghost Rider first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #5, Aug. 1972. He joined the Legion of Monsters in Marvel Premiere #28, Feb. 1976.

Halloween Brings... THE LEGION OF MONSTERS!

Each year, I try to draw a little something bloggy-wise to celebrate Halloween, the greatest time of the year. Last year, I celebrated by drawing pin-ups of Marvel's old monsters from the 50s-60s with the Amazing Marvel Monster Cocktail Party. The year before, a 31-card set entitled Monster Month. This year, inspired by Remender & Moore's Frankencastle run on the Punisher and the new Legion Of Monsters limited series by Hopeless & Doe (go buy it now), I present ghoulish pin-ups of favorite Legion members, all week long, starting tomorrow through Halloween. Above is a pilfered and redrawn logo from the old black & white magazine of the same name.

24 Hour Comic 2011: Page Nine

Page nine. I did this after the 24 hour project ended, but I'd like to finish the comic all the way through the twenty-four pages as quickly as possible, in the same style. I guess this is what Scott McCloud would call a noble failure, a la Kevin Eastman:

The 24 hours are continuous. You can take a nap, but the clock keeps ticking. If you get to 24 hours and you're not done, either end it there ("the Gaiman Variation") or keep going until you're done ("the Eastman Variation"). I consider both of these "Noble Failure" Variants and true 24 hour comics in spirit; but you must sincerely intend to do the 24 pages in 24 hours at the outset.

Well, I discovered I have a new porchmate who has successfully, without permission, decided to set up habitat upon my front porch for the winter. Strewn whiskey bottles and stubbed cigarette butts adorn the floor, yellowed underthings hang from the planters, and a strange stench of failure permeates the air. I was about to scold Rex for the unkempt appearance of the exterior of my humble abode, but then realized the porch was in such the same manner before he arrived. I told him he could stay if he made the place more presentable and if he delivered me a new comic for the blog. Begrudgingly, he came up with this beauty.

RIRW is a new concept I'm toying with as some sort of corporate identity, a start-up that hopes to compete in the Ocean State's fierce and competitive robot manufacturing industry. Did you know that 43% of all domestically purchased household and industrial robots are made right here in Rhode Island? Little known fact. Keep RI working, buy a robot.

I participated in 24 Hour Comic Day at Annex Comics again this year. The challenge: create a twenty-four page comic book within twenty-four hours. I didn't get that far again this year, about a 1/3 way through, but I will be posting what I created and possibly finishing the project in the same spirit this month. Stay tuned.

Well, I was passing by a drainage ditch yesterday and, much to my surprise, my old friend, Rex Tarkleton, was laying about in the muck gazing at the sky. I asked him what he was doing and he replied, "The backstroke, ya idiot." After helping him out of the grimy pit and lighting his dampened smoke, I agreed to buy this new strip from him. As we parted ways, I wished him a Happy Labor Day, to which he retorted, "Labor Day? You ain't never had a hard day o' work in yer life!" and completed the good tiding with a few gestures and colorful adjectives. I'd like to say it was good to see him and wonder how he ended up in Rhode Island, but these questions will have to be answered on our next chance meeting. Welcome back, Rex.
