Merry Mutant Christmas

Have a merry mutant Christmas all.

This piece was done for The Line It Is Drawn, Week 120:

Happy Holidays, everyone! Tell us a comic book character as well as a holiday motif you’d like to see said comic book character appear in! Emma Frost meets Frosty the Snowman? Santa and Son of Satan fight some bad guys? Doc Ock and Aunt May under the mistletoe? So on and so forth!

A follower on Twitter suggested "Gambit with a giant candy cane throwing kinetic Christmas cards." I didn't make it in time, so I post it here. Click the link above to see some other great pieces.

Odin IV, Part 1

From The Line It Is Drawn, week 109:

Based on a suggestion from Thea, mash-up comic book characters with the plays of William Shakespeare. Batman as Hamlet, Luke Cage as Othello, etc.

Twitter follower kevinsmithj suggested "Volstagg as Falstaff, from “Henry IV”, with Thor as Prince Hal and Odin as Henry IV himself."  It seemed like a nice fit, so voilá!

Billy Batson And The Shawshank Redemption

From The Line It Is Drawn, week 107:

As per an Axel Medellin suggestion, it’s Stephen King Week! Team-up/mash-up comic book characters with Stephen King novels or stories. Like, as an example, Squirrel Girl as Carrie. Now that I’ve given that example, no one else has to actually suggest it.

Twitter follower BeccaBlast suggested "Andy Dufresne gets a little help from Billy Batson at THAT moment in Shawshank Redemption."  Shawshank is one of my all time favorite flicks, so I found it hard to pass up.  Shazam!

Cover Homage

From The Line It Is Drawn, week 106

A return of one of our regular bits! Comic cover homages! Name a comic book character you’d like to appear in an homage to a classic comic book cover!
Twitter follower Ecovore suggested: Guardians of the Galaxy/Giant-size X-men 1 homage

I'm a fan of the original line-up from old issues of Marvel Presents, specifically, I remember getting an issue as a kid that featured the Guardians teaming up with the Silver Surfer and instantly being hooked. I enjoyed a few issues of their return in the early 90s, but soon lost interest. The new series I don't know that well, but I've always enjoyed the old Marvel monsters (like Groot) and was a fan of Mantlo/Mignola's Rocket Raccoon series, and the new Starlord seemed like he would be fun to draw.

My recent pieces, this one in particular, seem to be running very hot and saturated in their color treatment and it remains something I'm trying to correct as I continue to study different palettes.

Check out all the other great homages over at CBR's The Line It Is Drawn.

Hourman and Minuteboy

From The Line It Is Drawn, week 105:

Based on a suggestion from our own Xum and in honor of the news that Spider-Man appears to be gaining a sidekick, come up with a sidekick for a superhero who has never had an official sidekick!

Both joehennes and KeithWTSMorris suggested Hourman and Minuteboy on Twitter, and I've never drawn a Rex Tyler Hourman, so there you go.

Check out what the rest of the Liners decided to tackle at the link above.

"We absolutely love the logo. However, we changed the name of the project last week to 'Working Felines.' When will the new logo reflecting that change be ready?"

Hulk Is Not Stupid Frog!!!

From The Line It Is Drawn week 103:

Video game characters team-up or mash-up with comic book characters. Blade and Simon Belmont team-up, Deadpool in Halo, etc.

Twitter follower, rodtownsend, suggested Hulk as Frogger.  The green goliath is not bound by the same rules!

Check out the other great pieces by the other Liners.

Aquaman The Swim Teacher

From The Line It Is Drawn week 101:

It is Super Hero 101! Come up with a class you think a comic book would need to take/would be funny if they took. Wood Shop with Wolverine, History with the Planetary crew, etc. etc.

Suggestion of "Aquaman in swim class" came from Twitterer KeithAlanMorgan.  I went with him as the instructor, teaching kiddos how to swim.  The pool is filled with dangerous sea creatures, which Aquaman doesn't see as dangerous at all.  I don't know if that came across, or if  Aquaman comes across as a jerk.   Either way, here you go.

Kraven The Duck Hunter

A follower on twitter, KeithAlanMorgan, suggested "Kraven the Duck Hunter," originally drawn by Brad Millette way back in TLIID Week 12.  I had been messing with the grid function in Flash at the time for a concept at work, basically trying to draw things out in 8-bit.  This lent itself to the style and I used the old NES "black box" packaging in the mock cover, issue #100 for week 100.

OHOTMU: Arabian Knight

My first entry for Jon Morris' "The Official Handbook Of The Marvel Universe: Reduxe Edition", a project for which Jon invited a plethora of artists to redraw some entries of characters featured in Marvel's deluxe handbook from the mid '80s.  It was slim pickings when I was finally able to join in, but I started with the first neglected character in the alphabet.  More to come.

Playing With Your Food

A follower on twitter, Ecovore, suggested "Streaky the Supercat with Aquaman’s fish-talking powers."  It tickled my fancy and gave me a chance to get more cartoony.

Muh Fancy Squawkin' Timepiece

A follower on twitter, dc2omniverse, suggested "mash up Jonah Hex and Dick Tracy."  I'm a big fan of Jonah Hex and was upset when I heard Tony DeZuniga had died.  He was an amazing artist and paved the way for the Filipino comic artist invasion of the '70s.  RIP Tony.

Groop!

For this week's The Line It Is Drawn, the broad topic was:
A follower on twitter, hawaiianpunch, suggested "Groot and Doop."  Behold their lovechild: Groop!  He/She/It is already well-versed in doopspeak without even being fully sprouted!

This marks a return to TLIID after being so swamped with work for the past month or so.  I hope to keep it up and post pieces for the weeks I missed.  In any case, it's a nice break-up of the current Office Cat deluge.

Office Cat 30

Holiday Party: Spiking the punchbowl.

Has Brendan lost his mind, you ask?  Christmas in April?  No, pal, these Office Cats were drawn months in advance and sent off to Mr. Mr. every weekday morning (that's how they came about).  This one was drawn last December 19th and with a limited posting schedule on the blog, we're months behind.  So, for the next month or so, you get to relive last year's office holiday party.  At least, what you can remember from it.

25 Colored Marilyn Monroedoks

For this week's The Line It Is Drawn, the broad topic was:
A follower on Twitter suggested Warhol's 25 colored Marilyns as MODOK.”  I researched his image, did some tweaking to her face in Photoshop, adding Kirby's rocket-chair from TOS 94 with some tweaks, and made further changes in the inking and coloring stage.  A very Warholian process overall.  Anyway, wish I had more time to add some silkscreening effects to it, but I'm happy with the creepiness of it all.

As always, check out what the talented folks over The Line It Is Drawn came up with.  All of their pieces, this one included, will be posted in the following week at March MODOK Madness.

See you next week.

Here's a close up:
